PRE-PROJECT
CHECK LIST
Before
you select a contractor, do some groundwork and pre-planning.
Here is a checklist for gathering information to help you make
your decision. You'll find the time spent up-front . . . Is time
well spent.
Get
recommendations from friends and neighbors. If you do follow up
on advertisements, get names of their customers. Ask these customers
if the job was completed wit a reasonable time period; if problems
and complaints were rectified and if the completed job was what
they expected. Most importantly, go look at the completed job.
Walk
away from FLY BY NIGHT companies who happen to be canvassing your
neighborhood. Beware of ads that offer BARGAIN PACKAGES, often
the reason they're bargains is because of inferior materials and
workmanship. Be wary of a salesperson that pressures you to ORDER
NOW . . . Before prices go up. Remember . . . With unlicensed
contractors, you have no recourse if there are problems. Avoid
a company that wants a large down payment prior to starting work.
They are more than likely going to use your money to do someone
else's job.
Remember
to call the office of Consumer Affairs to check on a contractor.
Ask if there have been complaints registered against a prospective
contractor. If so, how many and were the complaints rectified?
When it comes to price . . . All contractors are not created equal.
The best value for your hard earned dollar is what's important.
